I am often commissioned to create custom paintings and I welcome the opportunity to paint a work to suit the collector's tastes. There are a number of reasons for commissioning an artwork and the end result can be rewarding for both artist and collector.
For the artist, the steps involved in creating a commissioned work are somewhat different than painting a non-commissioned work. The reasons a collector commissions a painting play an important role in the creation of the painting and are often the basis for the painting's design. In essence, the collector becomes the designer and the artist becomes a ghost writer (or painter) of sorts. The union of the collector and artist, joining forces with the common goal of creating a work of art that expresses the collector's vision in the chosen artist's style. If successful, both artist and collector are more enriched for the experience.
Commissioning a painting allows you to get exactly what you want ~ a work of art with a very personal connection.
That one that got away
It's not uncommon to hear a collector say they fell in love with a painting but didn't purchase it, only to find it was no longer available when the time was right to make the purchase. Commissioning a painting will not only give you the painting you wished you had purchased, but it may give you a painting you'll like even more than the one you originally had your eye on. I prefer to create works that include what you, the collector, envision as the final painting. Discussing your needs and wants is the basis for ideas that serve as the inspiration for a successful painting.
It can be difficult to find that just right piece of art for a specific space . . . the artwork may be just what you were looking for but the size is all wrong. When dealing with prints, this issue is less daunting. However a one-of-a-kind piece of art that has all of the required elements needed to suit your tastes, is much harder to find. When you commission a painting, you get the perfect painting at the perfect size ~ exactly what you want it to be.
A piece of art is a very personal investment and one that is often cherished for a lifetime. Whether a gift to yourself or someone important to you, once purchased, a painting becomes something more . . . it becomes a moment in time remembered. So your commissioned acquisition will not only be enjoyed as your personal work of art but will also have special meaning.
